VRA Awards Long-Serving Staff

A total of 214 staff of the Volta River Authority (VRA) have been awarded for their loyalty and commitment to service to the Authority and the socio-economic development of Ghana at large at a Long Service Awards night. The flagship event is a Management reward programme which is organized twice yearly to confer honours on staff who have worked in the VRA between the periods of: 10 to 40 years.

This year's award recipients included: 109 staff who had served for 10 years; 40 staff who had served for 15 years; 26 staff who had served for 20 years; 11 staff who had served for 25 years; 18 staff who had served for 30 years; 7 staff who had served for 35 years; and 3 staff who had served for 40 years. Each award recipient took home a certificate of merit and an undisclosed amount of money.

Ing. Kirk Koffi, the Chief Executive of VRA, in an address said, the Long-Service Awards scheme is a valuable component of the Authority's employee recognition package which gives Management an opportunity to recognize employees for their loyalty to the Authority. He said the reward package was invariably aimed at laying the ground work for increased productivity and efficiency in the ensuing years. He said VRA will continue to acknowledge the commitment and retention of employees to ensure that the Authority maintains a rich track-record of excellence and an enviable working environment.

Giving an overview of the VRA's performance in the energy market over the year, he mentioned that the Akosombo and Kpong Hydroelectric Dams were rated at 99 and 94 per cent plant availability respectively. He said the Electricity Utility Cost Group (EUCG) based in the USA, ranked the Akosombo Generating Plant among the top five hydroelectric plants in the world for Hydro Plants with sizes between 500 and 1000 Mega Watts in 2011.

He expressed satisfaction about the 80 per cent plant availability performance of the Takoradi Thermal Power Plant (TTPP) as against its average capacity of below 50 per cent previously and urged all staff to strive to maintain that feat.

The CE urged all Departments to benchmark their business processes with best international organizations which share a common mission and vision with the VRA.

"We must develop a high sense of over commitment, quality, reliability to service to become a great and excellent organization and must insist on excellence as a public necessity and live out to the core values of Accountablity, Commitment, Trust, Integrity and Team work", he said.
