VRA Organizes Workshop on 'Palliative Care' for staff of Akosombo Hospital

The Akosombo Hospital has organized a three-day workshop for staff on the theme "Palliative Care" at the Akosombo Conference Centre.

The workshop is aimed at equipping staff with the necessary skills and approaches used in caring for patients with serious illness as well as improving the quality of life for both patients and their families.
The facilitator, Ms. Dorothy Boatemah-Ameyaw, Chief Executive Officer of the Voice of Sub-Saharan African Women Society defined palliative care as a "specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses".

She explained that when quality palliative care is given, it enhances quality of life, offers support system to help the family cope and a source of relief from pain. This she said helps both patient and family to understand the various treatment processes, provide emotional and spiritual support among others.

Some participants demonstrated a sketch to show how patients in pain are cared for during their 48-hour dying process. They shared their experiences when treating patients with serious illnesses and majority of the participants revealed that, families sometimes do not allow them to provide the necessary care to patients in pain.

Ms. Dorothy Boatemah-Ameyaw encouraged them to show love to the families through effective communication and using the right approaches in explaining the state of illness. She later donated plasters, frontier therapeutic beds, internal catheters and external catheters, sacks, bandages, gloves, hand sanitizers, adult diapers among other medical items. According to her, she chose Akosombo Hospital because of the love she has for her country and the hospital.

Receiving the items, Mr.Kwasi Aniagyei, the Administrator of Health Services, expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Hospital and the Authority for her kind gesture and promised to utilize the items in ensuring quality health care.

The acting Head of Nursing, Ms. Millicent Mary Obiri congratulated the participants for their impressive turn out notwithstanding their busy schedules and believed that it has impacted on them positively.
