for Power Utilities in Africa

Message by the Ag. Chief Executive, Mr. Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa on the 56th Anniversary Celebration of the Volta River Authority

Dear Colleagues,

Fifty-six years ago today, April 26, 1961, the Volta River Authority (VRA) was established under the Volta River Development Act, (Act 46) of the Republic of Ghana, with the mandate to generate and transmit electricity in a commercial manner.  This mandate was subsequently expanded to include the distribution of electricity in the NEDCo area of operations.

We have every reason to celebrate this milestone. Over the years, we have performed our mandate with discipline, dedication and commitment thereby creating a niche as the power generating utility of excellence in the sub region.

The successes we have achieved in the past have not come on a silver platter considering the numerous challenges that have confronted our operations in particular the regular functioning of some of our generating plants.

As we are all aware, our sector faces some formidable headwinds notably financial sustainability, regulatory challenges and the Government's policy on the reform of the power sector.  While working with our sector Ministry to address these issues, we in VRA will need to revise how we run our business in order to continue to position the Authority as the preferred power utility in the sub-region.  We need to refocus in order to maintain our productive and competitive edge. This effort will require a significant change in our business processes and more significantly, our work culture. We need to maintain the culture of hard work, dedication and punctuality.  These are values which have historically set VRA apart from others.  It is my expectation that we will collectively continue to work assiduously towards the success and growth of VRA through teamwork and commitment.  I am also confident that if we pull together we can surmount our short term challenges. Let us remember that there are exciting opportunities ahead.

Special occasions like this afford us the opportunity to reflect and assess our performance and individual contributions to the success of VRA.  It also serves to encourage us for the challenging tasks ahead of us.   Let us dedicate today to all staff past and present for their hard work and devotion to duty as well as our stakeholders who have supported us in diverse ways to achieve this milestone. Let us also resolve to deliver our mandate on the pillars of financial prudence, operational excellence and human resource development.  We need to rise to the challenge of contributing towards keeping the lights on in the country.

I have no doubt that with unity of purpose and perseverance; we will continue to make VRA a Model of Excellence for Power Utilities in Africa.

Once again, I salute all of you and wish you and your families a blessed Anniversary.

Thank you and May God bless us all.
Mr. Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa
Ag. Chief Executive
