VRA Staff Attend Knowledge Management Workshop

A team from the Volta River Authority (VRA), the main power producer in Ghana, visited the National Research Foundation (NRF) as part of a two-week workshop on Knowledge Management. The delegates, who represent the VRA’s Projects and Systems Monitoring Department (P&SMD), were tasked with helping to kick start the company’s KM systems as a response to the need to develop guidelines for knowledge preservation, loss risk assessment and knowledge transfer within the organisation.

The hands-on workshop was co-ordinated by the NRF with input from the University of Johannesburg, which developed a module on the theory of Knowledge Management, Peter Tobins Consultancy which provided the practical module. Its objectives were to provide guidance on the knowledge management process from systematic identification, creation and development to knowledge capture, sharing and transfer. ESKOM’s own knowledge processes were used as an example for the team who also familiarised themselves with concepts such as organisational learning and culture, data governance and intellectual property as well as Knowledge Management software used by ESKOM.

The delegates held discussions with Mr Bishen Singh, Group Executive: Finance and Business Administration, and attended the workshop, which was run by Dr Daisy Selematsela, Executive Director: Knowledge Management, and Hein Spingies, Manager: Records and Document Management, at the NRF as well as at UJ and ESKOM.
