Chinese Ambassador Calls on Chief Executive

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Sun Baohong, has paid a curtesy call on Ing. Kirk Koffi, the Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority (VRA) to deepen bilateral relations and discuss issues of mutual concern.

The meeting also discussed possible means by which the Asia largest economy can provide technical expertise to the Authority in its bid to improve energy supply in the country.

Welcoming the Chinese consulate, Ing. Kirk Koffi said VRA has had a lot of collaboration from the Chinese government mentioning that a lot of Chinese companies were doing well in the country especially in the energy sector.

He said VRA is always ready to encourage private sector participation with the view of ensuring sustainability in the power generation business. He said the Authority has collaborated well with Asogli to make sure the power demand in the country is met in spite of the challenges.

Ing. Kirk Koffi said Chinese companies in the country have been supportive; an example he said is the Akosombo Textiles Limited (ATL) which has been in Akosombo since the inception of the township.

He stated that: "we are looking more into the future than today and there is the need to strategise well for change to enable us catch up the pace with China in terms of development."

Madam Baohong told the Chief Executive and his lieutenants that she had visited a number of energy installations across the country which included; the Akosombo Hydroelectric Generating Station, Bui Dam, Asogli and the Atuabo Gas processing plant and was impressed with works being done especially in the face of the power crisis.

She admitted that power plays a critical role in economic transformation, productivity and industrialization and admitted that the power deficit in Ghana is quite challenging because of many factors and her country was in a position to offer support to address it.

She suggested that there was the need to increase generation and power distribution and appealed for the involvement of Chinese companies in the power industry and cited the Chinese participation in the phase two expansion work of the Sunon Asogli Power project.

She said China was committed to partner VRA not only in power generation but also in distribution and other sectors which credible Chinese companies can partner VRA.

"Chinese companies can partner VRA to develop Akosombo in the future with the advantage of power supply." She added.
