VRA Joins in 'May Day' Celebrations

The Volta River Authority has joined in this year's May Day Celebrations to honour the contributions of Ghanaian workers to the growth of the nation's economy.

This year's celebrations which was held at the Independence Square in Accra, was under the theme, "Ghana's Economy, A Concern for All".

Speaking at the event, the President of the Republic of Ghana, HE John Dramani Mahama acknowledged the challenges the economy was saddled with, but gave the assurance that the economic landscape of the country was going to improve by the end of the year. He said even though some of government's measures introduced to revive the economy are harsh, "I assure you my countrymen and women, that these measures are achieving the desired effect and the economy is gradually responding."

He said clear measures had been instituted to deal with corruption which is said to be worsening.

"We are committed to plugging loopholes in our revenue systems and will carry out the reforms in our revenue administration to ensure sustainable economic growth...In the next few weeks, we will initiate a massive payroll audit with the view to eliminating the pervasive ghost names and ensuring that these ghosts die a permanent death and resurrect no more," he stated.

In his address, Mr. Kofi Asamoah who is the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and also the mouthpiece of organized labor, called on government not to sign to the European Union's Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) considering the country's current economic state. He announced, however, that government had rescinded its decision not to increase salary and cost of living allowance (COLA) in 2014 to cushion workers.

Speaking on the oil and gas industry, Mr. Asamoah also cautioned government to take a second look at its decision to grant permit to a foreign private company to establish a new oil logistics port at Atuabo. This, if not considered, he said, will not only violate the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority (GPHA) Act 160 of 1986 (PNDCL 160), which gives GPHA the sole authority to plan, build, manage, maintain, operate and control ports but undermine national sovereignty and security.

This year's celebration which, was attended by a fairly large section of the nation's workforce, witnessed exciting scenes, including a parade session by staff of some organizations and institutions.

Present at the event also were the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Honourable Nii Armah Ashietey; the Chief Executive of VRA, Ing. Kirk Koffi; and other dignitaries.
