VRA Commissions Refurbished Morgue
Work on the replacement and installation of an ultra-modern central refrigeration system for the Akososmbo Hospital Mortuary has been completed after six weeks of intensive work.
The intent behind the refurbishment was to phase-out the old function cold room freezers which could not produce the required temperature for the preservation of dead bodies at the mortuary.
According to Dr. Mrs. Rebecca Acquaah–Arhin, Director of the Health Services Department, that posed a grave danger to the hospital including staff of the mortuary as bodies admitted to the morgue were deteriorating at a faster pace.
This led to the closure of the mortuary to the general public for about six weeks for the replacement of the old cold room system with the new one which dominates in most mortuaries in modern use.
At a brief ceremony to commission the project, Dr. Mrs. Acquaah-Arhin stated that the refurbishment was crucial to the hospital since it would mark an end to challenges encountered at the morgue and increase work efficiency.
She noted that the morgue will soon undergo a massive expansion work to increase its current capacity of 36 cold rooms to 150 body cold rooms to ensure more intake of dead bodies.
Mr. Ralph Punamane, the Senior Administrative Officer of the Health Services Department, also emphasized that the completion of the project had come at an opportune time to save cost and minimize work load at the morgue
He recalled that, prior to the replacement, dead bodies in the cold rooms started decomposing due to the unsupportive temperature at the mortuary which brought about a pungent smell and therefore the need for rehabilitation.
The project was executed by Marko Refrigeration and Air Condition Company Limited.
Handing over the project, Mr. Kwabena Amaning – Darko, Managing Director of the company, said his outfit spent two weeks to complete the installations of the project.
He said the new cold room freezers comes with a multi – cabinet mortuary freezers to contain 36 corpses, condensing units, evaporating units, copper wirings, as well as switches.
The newly installed anti – corrosive condensing units have total working capacity of 500 horsepower and can operate between the temperatures of -5 and +5 degrees to ensure that bodies in the freezers are not over frozen.
