Volta River Authority Supports Hole-in-Heart Child
Management of the Volta River Authority gathered in Akuse to review activities undertaken in the first half of 2013 and to review programmes outlined for the second half of the year.
Management also deemed it fit to honour the Director, Special Engineering projects Ing. Stephen Kwakye Doku, (Steve Doku) who retired from active service after serving the Authority in various capacities over the past 34 years by organising a dinner in his honour.
Speaking at the dinner, the Chief Executive of VRA, Kweku Awotwi saluted Steve Doku and said “You were a key resource during the negotiation and implementation of the Gas Pipeline project and we say Thank you” as he acknowledged the fantastic services he rendered to the VRA over years.
He congratulated Ing. Doku for his new appointment to the Energy Ministry, adding “you are going to play a pivotal role in the power sector and we would count on you even as we pledge our commitment to support you”.
The Chief Executive, Mr. Awotwi, together with his three Deputies , Ing Kirk Koffi, Mr. Maxwell Odoom and Ms. Alexandra Totoe assisted Ing. Steve Doku in cutting his parting cake and also congratulated him after which a parting gift was presented to him by the Chief Executive on behalf of Management.
The DCEs also joined some Directors including, Director Thermal Ing. Richard Badger, Director Investment Mr. Samuel Gyawu, Director, Restructuring Task Force Ing. Joseph Sutherland to share their experiences of working with Ing. Doku.
Ing. Steve Doku was employed on September 1, 1979, as Assistant Mechanical Engineer to the Kpong Project, Akuse soon after completing his National Service.
He rose through the ranks and served in various capacities as Mechanical Engineer and Senior Mechanical Engineer of Power Operations in Akosombo (1981) and Akuse (1984) respectively and was later promoted as Principal Mechanical Engineer at the Technical Services (Project & Systems Monitoring) department in Akosombo (1988).
By dint of his hard work, he was elevated to the position of Plant Manager of the Kpong generating station in January 1992 and subsequently as Deputy General Manager of the Takoradi Thermal Power Station in July 2000 before being appointed as Director Hydro generation at Akosombo in May, 2002.
Ing. Steve Doku resigned from the Authority on June 4, 2003 but was re-engaged as Director, Thermal Generation on August 2, 2004. Four years after his re-engagement, he was re-assigned Director, Special Engineering Projects on August 11, 2008, a position he held until his retirement from the Authority on July 12, 2013.
