Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Minister Tours Akosombo Generating Station
The Volta River Project is acclaimed the single largest economic investment in the history of Ghana since independence.
The project, since its inception in 1961, has had the mission of powering economies and raising the living standards of the peoples of Ghana and West Africa.
The Volta River Project has witnessed numerous personalities visiting its facilities either for pleasure or to acquaint themselves with its operation.
One of such personalities to recently visit the Akosombo Hydro Electric Generating Station is Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
Touring the Akosombo Hydro Electric Generating Station, Dr Ghebreyesus expressed amazement at the level of foresight and vision of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah in putting up the Akosombo Hydro Electric Generating Station. "Even though at the time Ghana's population was far less than what they have now, he did not hesitate to see beyond the moment but with vision put up this edifice", he said.
He indicated that his visit is aimed at getting first-hand information on the operations of Hydro Electric dam in Africa of which his country is about venturing into. He believed that those impacted by the operations of the Authority must be proud that they have sacrificed for the greater good of mother Ghana.
Dr Ghebreyesus also revealed he will be signing a bilateral agreement with Ghana on behalf of his country aimed at strengthening mutual relationship between the two countries.
Welcoming the delegation to the Akosombo Hydro Electric Station on behalf of Management, the Director Hydro Generation Department Mr K.B Amoako said the Authority is pleased to share its rich experience of over 50 years of operating two Hydro Dams in sub-Sahara Africa.
He disclosed that the Volta River Authority is positioning itself through the establishment of the International Business Unit to offer expertise services to other countries who wish to venture into power generation.
The Plant Manager of Akosombo Hydro Electric Generating Station, Ing. Charles de-Bordes who conducted the delegation round the plant expressed his delight about the visit.
