VRA Explores Opportunities in Coal Energy Generation

The Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority (VRA) Ing. Kirk Koffi says addressing the country's current energy crisis demands venturing into other areas of power generation, such as coal energy, as alternatives to the Authority's traditional hydro, thermal and solar generation sources.

Ing. Koffi reiterated the Authority's desire at working the extra mile to ensure that it increases its energy generation capacity to curtail the current energy crisis confronting the country.

"We will ensure that VRA ventures into coal power generation. It is a reliable source of energy and the Authority will explore all possibilities since it is cheaper than other types of fuel," he said.

The Chief Executive of the VRA disclosed this when a Chinese delegation from Shenzhen Energy Group Ghana Coal Firing (SEGGCF) paid a courtesy call on him at the Akosombo Generating Power Station to update the Authority on their feasibility study on a possible coal energy project.

Ing. Koffi added that the Authority has reached a stage where it has become necessary to take sensitive decisions such as working assiduously to get a reserve margin of energy in order to address the deficit in the county's power sector.

The head of the Engineering Department of the SEGGCF Ing. Kodzo Wang lauded the VRA for entrusting them with the contract to stabilize the perennial energy crisis in the country.

"At the moment we are still at the mandatory feasibility stage, and the actual work will begin next year and we hope to complete the project in 2020", he indicated.

Mr. Wang expressed his profound gratitude for the hospitality he and his team had enjoyed during their three months stay in the country.

"Ghana is a beautiful country and we are committed to do anything within our confines to build a Coal Power Plant with a possible low price to curb the energy crisis," he said.
