Volta River Authority Supports Hole-in-Heart Child

In fulfillment of the VRA's corporate social responsibility objectives, the Authority makes yearly contributions to the Ghana Heart Foundation. This year, to ensure that a particular life is saved, the VRA has donated towards the open heart operation of Michael Fynn, a fifteen (15) months old child from Abuesi in the Shama District of the Western Region of Ghana, with an amount of Ten thousand Ghana Cedis representing 36% of the total cost of surgery.

The donation was made to the Ghana National Cardiothoracic Centre (GNCTC) of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Present at the donation were the parents of Michael, Mr and Mrs. Afful Fynn; Dr. Innocent Kwashie Adzamli, and staff of GNCTC, who expressed gratitude for the gesture.

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the US Department of Health and Human services, hole in heart conditions, known as Patent Ductus Arteriousus, and Ventricular Septal Defect, are simple congenital heart defects with the heart's structure at birth. These defects change the normal flow of blood through the heart, resulting in heart failure.

Major symptoms of the condition in infancy are poor feeding and growth. Other symptoms include fatigue (tiredness), tiring easily during physical activity, shortness of breath, a buildup of blood and fluid in the lungs, swelling in the ankles, feet, legs, abdomen, and veins in the neck.

In most cases, a hole-in-heart condition requires an open heart surgery to correct.
