Akosombo International School (AIS) Climaxes 50th Anniversary
The Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Mr. Kweku A. Awotwi, has challenged Management and students of the Akosombo International School (AIS) to continue to uphold in high esteem the high standard of academic and non-academic successes, which have been hallmarks of the school over the past five decade.
Mr. Kweku Awotwi, who was the special guest at the 50th anniversary celebration of AIS, observed that the VRA’s path of progress and history is intertwined with that of AIS.
“Currently the VRA is taking improvement initiatives through restructuring to increase efficiency and productivity, and remain relevant to society”, He indicated.
The school which was established on 24th September 1962 with about 28 Ghanaian children and a handful of foreigners with the intention of providing quality education for the wards of the Volta River Authority at the time now has over thousands of children from both local and abroad pursuing basic and secondary education respectively.
Mr. Kweku Awotwi, also used the occasion to pay tribute to all stakeholders whose commitment has brought the school this far.
“ I pay tribute to the students and teachers, parent-Teacher Association and the administrative staff, past and present, whose commitment and dedication account for the achievements and growth of AIS through the years”, He said.
In his address, the Minister of Education, who doubled as the special Guest of Honor at the occasion, Mr. Lee Ocran hailed management, staff and students of AIS for the numerous achievements the school has chalked over the past five decades.
He said AIS’ excellent academic performance is no doubt an achievement that is praised all over the world.
Mr. Ocran said AIS’ contribution to the human development of the country over the years cannot be over emphasized and promised his Ministry’s commitment to assisting the school in whatever capacity that it can.
Prof. F.W.Y Momade, the Provost of College of Engineering of Kwame Momabe of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology who spoke on behalf of the Guest Speaker, Prof. Ellis Otto the Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), said AIS has, over the years, maintained an enviable academic record and discipline which has contributed to a large number of students from AIS being admitted into the university each year.
He said VRA over the years has had special collaboration with KNUST due to its peculiar field of operation.
Prof. Momade underscored the relevance of quality education and urged VRA not to renege on its efforts of training innovative future leaders.
The General Manager, VRA Schools, Mr. Arnold K. Seshie, who gave a report on the performance of the school, said the school in 2012 obtained aggregate 99.3% in the West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE), while the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) also had a 100 percent in success rate.
He said the school has also been recognized internationally with the awarding of some students by top officials of the British Council for their excellent performance at the Cambridge International Examination (CIE).
Mr. Seshie noted that the school, aside its thrilling academic records, is faced with infrastructure challenges that needs to be solved in order to befit the school’s international education status.
