Press Release: Recent Outages Due to Significant Production Downtime

The Volta River Authority (VRA) wishes to inform its valued customers and utility partners that within the last 48 hours its thermal generating facilities at Aboadze and Tema have witnessed significant production downtime, and this may have necessitated some power outages across the country.

In Aboadze, near Takoradi, most of the thermal units could not operate as a result of insufficient crude oil. The crude oil consignment that was delivered could not meet the right specifications, and therefore took twice the amount of time usually required to treat the fuel. Similarly, the Tema thermal plants could not operate at maximum capacity because fuel had to be rationed between VRA plants and that of CENIT, owned and operated by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

Currently, treatment of crude oil in Aboadze is on-going and is expected to get to the operating level that would allow for all thermal units to start operation at full capacity. In the same vein, CENIT, since Sunday, November 25, 2012, has received its own consignment of crude oil, which would make it possible for the thermal plants in Tema to also operate optimally.

All things being equal, the power supply situation is expected to improve by peak time Tuesday, November 27, 2012, and by Sunday, December 2, 2012, service would return to normalcy, when all generating facilities will be in full production.
